Family Ring with Birthstones – Two Rings, One Shared Story

This family ring was created according to the personal vision of a client for whom we had previously crafted her wedding bands. She wanted a piece of jewelry that would symbolize the family’s bond while also complementing her existing wedding bands.

The result is a custom-designed family ring made of Mokume Gane and rose gold. Two rings—not permanently joined—meet along a curved, wavy line. A narrow band of rose gold holds both parts together. Two colored sapphires symbolize the children.

Mokume Gane and rose gold—two distinct finishes

For this family ring, master goldsmith Markus Wiesner used a combination of 500 palladium and 925 silver, crafted using the Japanese Mokume Gane forging technique, as well as 585 rose gold.

The Mokume Gane material is created by fire-welding layers of metal of different colors. The characteristic pattern lines become visible through subsequent forging and finishing.

For this ring, the Mokume Gane surface was etched and textured with hammer marks. The warm rose gold provides a striking contrast.

Two rings connected by a band of red gold

The two ring elements are not permanently soldered together. They are connected by a continuous band of red gold that holds the two parts together.

A curved, wavy line forms the transition between the different materials. The rose gold band is also engraved with a heart.

This design was developed specifically for the family ring and brings the client’s vision to life in a handcrafted form.

Two sapphires as personal family symbols

Two colored gemstones were set into the ring to represent the two children. A pink and a blue brilliant-cut sapphire serve this symbolic purpose.

The stones are not merely decorative. Their colors were specifically chosen to represent the two children in the piece of jewelry.

Even with a new custom design, personal ideas regarding gemstones, colors, and symbols can be incorporated into the design.

Dimensions and Ring Profile

The family ring shown here has a total width of 10 mm and a profile height of 2 mm. The ring profile is slightly arched and runs across both ring elements.

The combination of palladium-silver Mokume-Gane and rose gold, along with the wavy line and the connecting band, creates a cohesive design.
