Family gold or scrap gold wedding rings

As goldsmiths, we will of course also process your old gold or family gold into a wedding ring pair of your choice. In principle, almost every pair of wedding rings can also be made from old gold. It is also possible to change the fineness of the gold by re-alloying it. This means, for example, that if the gold is 333, it can be upgraded to a 585 or 750 alloy by adding fine gold.

Scrap gold and family gold wedding rings also available in white gold

If you would like a pair of wedding rings in white gold, and you would like us to use your yellow family gold, or simply yellow old gold, we can also change this to a white gold alloy by adding palladium. It is also possible to use platinum or palladium from your family gold stock.

Family gold wedding rings with diamonds

The use of diamonds and other precious stones is also possible for wedding rings made from old and family gold. These can be set as individual stones, or incorporated in a channel or cut setting. Our master jewellers guarantee perfect craftsmanship in the realisation of your diamond wishes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wedding Rings Made from Family Gold

Can new wedding rings be made from old family jewelry?

Yes. In many cases, new wedding rings can be made from existing family gold.

Old rings, necklaces, bracelets, or other gold jewelry are suitable for this purpose. The existing material is first inspected and then prepared for the planned creation.

The special appeal lies in the fact that you’re not simply buying new wedding rings. A part of the family’s history is incorporated into the new rings and carried forward.

For example, jewelry from parents or grandparents can become part of your own wedding bands and take on new meaning.

What is the difference between scrap gold and family gold?

Technically, both can refer to used gold or gold alloys that have already been processed. For us, the key difference lies in the personal significance.

Recycled gold can be jewelry that is no longer worn or needed and is used primarily for its material value.

Family gold, on the other hand, often has a story behind it. It might come from grandparents’ wedding rings, a piece of jewelry belonging to one’s mother, or an inherited ring.

With wedding bands made from family gold, therefore, the focus is not merely on recycling a valuable raw material. The existing material connects the new wedding bands to people and memories from one’s own family.

What types of jewelry can be used to make wedding rings from family gold?

In general, many gold jewelry pieces are suitable, such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, pendants, or pieces that are no longer worn.

However, it’s not just a matter of a piece of jewelry looking gold-colored. Before processing, we must determine exactly what material and alloy it actually is.

Any existing solder joints, different alloys, or other components of a piece of jewelry must also be taken into account during further processing.

That’s why we first examine the material you bring in and then decide which pieces are suitable for the new wedding rings.

Can 333 family gold be used to make new wedding rings?

Yes. Having 333 family gold does not automatically mean that the new wedding rings must also be made from 333 gold.

We can adjust the fine gold content of the existing material by adding fine gold. For example, existing 333 family gold can be realloyed into a higher-quality 585 or 750 gold alloy.

Which alloy is best suited for the new wedding rings depends on the existing material and the desired design.

This allows you to preserve your personal family gold while adapting it to the requirements of the new wedding rings.

Can white gold wedding rings also be made from yellow family gold?

Yes. Under the right conditions, existing yellow family gold can also be used to create new wedding rings in a white gold alloy.

To do this, the existing gold alloy can be modified by adding suitable alloying elements—such as palladium.

This means that just because the inherited piece of jewelry is yellow, the new wedding rings do not necessarily have to be yellow gold rings.

We’ll assess and discuss which color and alloy can be produced technically based on the existing material and the desired rings.

Can pieces of jewelry from both families be used together?

In principle, suitable pieces of jewelry from both families can be incorporated into the new wedding rings.

This is precisely where the beautiful symbolism lies: material from two families becomes the wedding rings for a new chapter in their shared life.

However, the individual pieces of jewelry must first be examined for material and alloy. Not just any metals can be easily melted together and then processed into a high-quality wedding ring alloy.

If the materials are suitable, we can work together to decide how to incorporate both partners’ family gold into the new rings.

Is our own family gold truly preserved in the new wedding rings?

If the existing family gold is used directly for the new wedding rings, we use this material as the raw material for production.

Depending on the desired alloy, it may be necessary to add additional precious metal. This is the case, for example, if the fine gold content needs to be adjusted or a different gold color is to be created.

Thus, the existing family gold does not simply become an unchanged piece of old jewelry in a new form. The material is handcrafted and, if necessary, re-alloyed.

However, its history is preserved: the gold that was previously part of the old jewelry becomes part of the new wedding rings.

What happens to gemstones or diamonds from the old jewelry?

Any diamonds and gemstones are removed from the old jewelry before the gold is melted down.

We can then assess whether they are suitable for the new wedding rings or another new piece of jewelry.

Whether an existing stone can be reused depends, among other things, on its type, size, quality, and condition, as well as on the planned design.

If an existing diamond can be meaningfully integrated into the new wedding rings, it allows another component of the original piece of jewelry—in addition to the family gold—to be preserved.

Does family gold have to be melted down?

Not necessarily.

The traditional approach involves melting down suitable old jewelry, refining the material, and crafting new wedding rings from it.

However, there are also designs in which existing material can be intentionally preserved as a visible element.

With our Mokume Gane rings, for example, suitable family gold can be integrated as a single gold line within a multicolored Mokume Gane pattern.

This gives a visible line within the grain a very specific meaning: it consists of gold that once belonged to the family.

Can family gold be combined with Mokume Gane?

Yes, provided the material is of suitable quality, we can also incorporate family gold into new Mokume Gane wedding rings.

One particularly beautiful option is to use existing yellow gold as a single layer or line within a Mokume Gane design.

For example, a gold line made from the family gold can run visibly through the pattern of the new rings, set among other precious metals.

This way, the family history not only becomes part of the material but can even remain visible in the finished ring.

You can learn more about this special forging technique under Mokume Gane Rings and Wedding Bands.

What happens if our family gold isn’t suitable for the new wedding rings?

Not every piece of old jewelry can be meaningfully used directly for a new creation.

This may be due, for example, to the composition of the material, the presence of other metals, or the fact that the material does not suit the desired design of the new rings.

In this case, the existing gold is still not worthless.

If direct reuse isn’t practical, we can credit the old gold or family gold and offset its value against the cost of the new rings.

After examining the material, we’ll discuss whether reworking it or crediting its value is the better solution.

Can wedding rings made from family gold be custom-designed?

Yes. Using family gold does not mean you’re limited to a specific standard model when it comes to the shape or design of the new wedding rings.

Ring width, profile, finish, gold color, engravings, and, if applicable, diamonds can all be customized according to technical feasibility.

The existing material serves as the starting point—we can work together to determine what the new rings will look like.

This is precisely why wedding rings made from family gold are particularly well-suited for custom-made designs in our goldsmith’s workshop.

Can we forge wedding rings from our family gold ourselves?

This may be possible depending on the desired design and the available material.

With our “Forge Your Own Wedding Rings ” program, couples craft their own wedding rings under professional guidance.

We must first assess whether the family gold you bring in can be used directly, based on the material and the desired manufacturing method.

If the conditions are right, this allows you to combine two particularly personal elements: material from your own family history and your active participation in creating the new wedding rings.

Are wedding rings made from family gold more sustainable than rings made entirely from new materials?

Reusing existing gold is a form of material recycling. Precious metal that already exists is given a new purpose and doesn’t have to sit unused in a jewelry box.

With family gold, however, there’s a second aspect that’s more important to many couples than the material cycle alone.

An existing piece of jewelry isn’t simply sold and replaced with something new. Its material is passed on and takes on a new purpose within the family.

In this way, wedding rings made from family gold combine resource use with a personal story.

How much do wedding rings made from family gold cost?

The cost cannot be determined solely by the weight of the gold you bring in.

Key factors include the condition and composition of the existing material, the desired new alloy, the ring’s width and thickness, and the craftsmanship required for processing and fabrication.

Additional costs may apply for other precious metals, diamonds, engravings, or special finishes.

The existing family gold naturally has a material value and is factored into the calculation according to the chosen process.

Once we have examined the existing material and jointly determined the desired wedding rings, we can provide a specific cost estimate.
