A distinctive feature of Matoa is its gently matte finish. The matte finish takes away some of the metal’s shine, making the lines appear soft and understated. Yellow gold and palladium remain clearly distinguishable from one another, yet appear harmoniously united.

This results in Mokume Gane rings whose unique character often only becomes fully apparent at second glance. Matoa is thus an interesting choice for couples seeking extraordinary wedding bands but who prefer a calm and elegant design.

Two Precious Metals—Yellow Gold and Palladium

For Matoa, we use 750 yellow gold and 500 palladium. The warm yellow of the gold creates a natural contrast to the cooler gray tone of the palladium.

This color effect is not applied to the rings after the fact. In our own goldsmith’s workshop, the different layers of precious metals are permanently fused together to form the solid Mokume-Gane layered material. It is only through the subsequent forging and finishing that the visible grain pattern emerges.

During this process, different areas of the bonded layers repeatedly come to the surface. This is why we can deliberately shape the character of Matoa, though its exact line patterns cannot be reproduced industrially. Each newly crafted pair of rings has its own unique pattern.

Seamlessly forged

Matoa is forged seamlessly from solid Mokume-Gane layered material. The rings are therefore not made from a base ring onto which a patterned sheet is simply soldered.

As a result, there is no solder joint where the grain pattern is visibly interrupted. The lines can continue all the way around the ring, and the two precious metals form a closed, continuous design.

This seamless craftsmanship holds special significance, particularly for a wedding ring: the ring and its grain pattern have no visible beginning and no visible end. Here, artisanal craftsmanship and the classic symbolism of the wedding ring come together seamlessly.

Diamonds as a Deliberate Accent

The Matoa women’s ring can be designed with diamonds upon request. The understated two-tone surface in particular provides a beautiful backdrop for this: a diamond adds a bright accent without detracting from the characteristic Mokume-Gane grain.

We tailor how the stone is incorporated into the custom design to suit each specific ring and the resulting pattern.

Custom-Made for You

The pair of rings shown here is a previously crafted Matoa design and serves as an example of the color effect and character of the model. Your own rings will be newly crafted for you, each developing its own unique grain pattern.

The ring width can be selected from 4 to 10 mm. Wider versions are also available upon request. The standard height is 2 mm and can be adjusted to meet individual preferences.

The surface finish can also be customized. In addition to the matte finish characteristic of Matoa, a pearl-matte finish is available. This does not alter the actual Mokume-Gane pattern, but it does change its visual effect in the light.

Upon request, the women’s ring can also be set with diamonds.

Extraordinary wedding rings for lovers of subtle contrasts

Matoa doesn’t have to be flashy to be unique. It is precisely the use of just two precious metals that gives this model its special charm. The warm yellow gold cuts through the cooler palladium, clearly highlighting the handcrafted grain.

The matte finish softens the contrasts. The pattern remains visible but does not dominate the design. Depending on the angle of the light, individual lines stand out more prominently and then fade back into the ring’s overall understated appearance.

This is what sets Matoa apart from more color-intensive three- or four-color Mokume Gane designs. Those who love the organic patterns of Mokume Gane but prefer a more understated color palette for their wedding rings will find a very balanced combination here.

Handcrafted in our goldsmith’s workshop

Matoa is created in our own goldsmith’s workshop. Master goldsmith Markus Wiesner does not simply work with an industrially prefabricated Mokume-Gane ring.

The layers of 750 yellow gold and 500 palladium are welded together to form a solid Mokume-Gane laminate. Through forging and further precise craftsmanship, Markus Wiesner then develops the characteristic grain pattern of the ring pair.

While the basic character of the pattern can be influenced, its exact course is constantly recreated anew during the artisanal process. As a result, two pairs of rings can be unmistakably recognizable as Matoa yet never look completely identical.
