Iroko is one of our goldsmiths’ classic Mokume Gane rings. What makes it special is its clearly recognizable, flowing wood grain pattern created from palladium and silver. Fine lines run side by side, converge, then open up again, forming the natural veining that gives the Japanese Mokume Gane technique its unmistakable character.

The light, understated combination of materials allows the pattern itself to take center stage. Instead of bold gold tones, various shades of gray and silver define the ring’s appearance. Depending on how the light hits it, individual lines stand out more prominently, while others almost blend into the surface.

This makes Iroko a particularly beautiful choice for couples seeking extraordinary wedding rings whose appeal stems less from color than from a vibrant, organic grain.

Two precious metals and 19 layers for a classic wood grain

Iroko is crafted from palladium and silver. A total of 19 layers of precious metal are fused together to create the base pattern. This layered structure gives rise to the distinct wood and figure grain that is characteristic of Iroko.

We do not purchase the Mokume-Gane layered material pre-made. In our own goldsmith’s workshop, the prepared precious metal layers are welded together and then forged, rolled, and further processed.

It is only through this process that the different layers become visible. The lines and color variations are therefore not decorations applied afterward, but arise directly from the material itself.

The fundamental character of iroko can be recreated in a new piece. However, the exact pattern of the lines cannot be replicated precisely. That is why each pair of rings has its own unique grain and remains a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted piece.

Seamlessly forged

We craft Iroko seamlessly from solid Mokume-Gane layered material. There is no solder joint where the pattern is visibly interrupted.

This manufacturing method really shines, especially with the classic wood grain of Iroko. The grain can continue all the way around the ring, creating a natural, continuous flow.

The ring has no artificial front side. As you rotate it on your finger, different sections of the same continuous grain pattern are revealed.

Diamonds as a Deliberate Accent

Diamonds can also be incorporated into the design of Iroko pieces. It is particularly appealing when small diamonds align with an existing line in the Mokume-Gane grain, thereby becoming part of the pattern.

Similarly, individual diamonds can be used as subtle points of light. We tailor their position, number, and size to each specific pair of rings and the flow of their unique grain pattern.

This ensures that the characteristic Iroko pattern remains the focal point, and the diamond setting complements the surface rather than obscuring it.

Custom-made for you

The pair of Iroko rings shown here is an example of the character of this pattern. Your own pair will be newly crafted in our goldsmith’s workshop and will develop its own unique pattern.

The ring width can be chosen between 4 and 12 mm. The design described here has a profile height of approximately 2 mm and a slightly domed profile.

In addition to diamonds, we have also created custom designs for the Iroko collection featuring additional accents of yellow or red gold. We’ll discuss which variation makes the most sense from both a technical and design perspective when planning your pair of rings.

Extraordinary wedding rings for lovers of classic Mokume Gane grain patterns

Iroko beautifully illustrates why Mokume Gane originally evokes the grain of natural wood. The lines do not run in strictly geometric patterns across the surface. They converge, curve, open up, and then come together again.

Compared to multicolored models featuring yellow or red gold, Iroko has a more subdued appearance. Palladium and silver create a light, understated color palette, allowing the grain itself to stand out particularly clearly.

This is precisely what makes this design so appealing. From a distance, the rings appear harmonious and almost serene. Only upon closer inspection do you discover just how many different lines and subtle variations are hidden within the surface.

Iroko is therefore particularly well-suited for couples who want unique wedding rings without them having to be flashy or vibrantly colored. Their uniqueness lies in the material and the handcrafted pattern.

Handcrafted in our goldsmith’s workshop

The creation of Iroko begins with the assembly of the Mokume-Gane layered material. Master goldsmith Markus Wiesner fuses the individual layers of palladium and silver together in our own workshop to form a solid block of material.

This layered material is then forged, rolled, and carefully refined. In the process, the inner layers gradually become visible, and the characteristic Iroko grain develops.

The direction and basic character of the pattern can be influenced by the artisan’s craftsmanship. However, it is not possible to reproduce an industrially identical design—and that is precisely the intention. Each newly forged Iroko piece takes on its own unique lines.
