Mokume Gane Clasps for Pearl Necklaces

A clasp for a pearl necklace or gemstone necklace doesn’t necessarily have to remain invisible. It can also become the focal point of the piece itself.

Master goldsmith and silversmith Markus Wiesner crafts extraordinary jewelry clasps from Mokume Gane. This Japanese metalworking technique involves combining and working with precious metals of different colors to create vibrant, wood-like patterns. As a result, each clasp has its own unique pattern.

The various models combine unique jewelry design with the function of a necklace clasp. Some designs can also be worn as pendants.

Bead closing in Mokume Gane technique

With a classic pearl necklace, the clasp is usually located at the nape of the neck and remains largely invisible. Our Mokume Gane pearl clasps take a different approach. They are deliberately designed to be a visible part of the piece of jewelry and can therefore also be worn at the front of the necklace.

The clasps consist of a technically sophisticated locking mechanism and a decorative top piece made of Mokume Gane. The combination of different precious metals creates the wood-like patterns characteristic of this Japanese metalworking technique.

The Funa, Gongu, Kokoro, and Kora Jewelry Collections

The design of our pearl clasps is inspired by the basic forms of the Funa, Gongu, Kokoro, and Kora jewelry collections. The individual models differ in their geometric shapes and the distinct effect of the Mokume Gane patterns.

You can choose from various metal combinations featuring light silver and palladium tones as well as warm gold hues. Some models are additionally set with small brilliant-cut diamonds that blend seamlessly into the clasp’s design.

Since the patterns are created by hand during the crafting of the layered metal composite, every Mokume Gane clasp is one-of-a-kind.

Interchangeable Clasps for Pearl and Gemstone Necklaces

A technical feature is the use of special mounting mechanisms. These allow a jewelry clasp to be combined with different pearl necklaces, provided the necklaces are equipped with a compatible locking system.

This means, for example, that an existing pearl necklace can be fitted with a new Mokume Gane clasp. Switching between different necklaces is also possible if the connections are properly prepared.

Which mechanism is suitable for a particular necklace depends on the existing clasp system and the design of the necklace. We’d be happy to assess the options available for your pearl or gemstone necklace.

Wearing Jewelry Clasps as Pendants

Some of our Mokume Gane clasps can be used not only as chain clasps but also worn as standalone pendants. This allows the same piece of jewelry to be worn in different ways.

You can find more jewelry pieces with similar designs in our Mokume Gane pendants collection .

Custom Mokume Gane Pearl Clasps from Our Goldsmith’s Workshop

Master goldsmith and silversmith Markus Wiesner has been working with the Japanese Mokume Gane forging technique since 2009. In addition to wedding bands and decorative rings, his workshop also produces these intricately crafted jewelry clasps.

Depending on the model, various metal combinations and designs—with or without diamonds—are available. Custom pieces can also be created upon request.

If you’d like to add a special clasp to an existing pearl necklace or have questions about the various clasp systems, we’d be happy to advise you at our goldsmith’s shop in Beilstein.
